Austin Maynard Architects adds five gardens to a Melbourne terrace house.

Melbourne’s Fitzroy suburb is now home to a renovated Victorian terrace house designed by Austin Maynard Architects. Named Helvetia, the house was transformed to include various green spaces, including rooftop gardens, planted terraces, and a fish-pond atrium. The architects aimed to retain and reuse materials in their design, in line with the client’s focus on sustainability. The renovated site now features five distinct garden areas, each with its own purpose and personality. The house also includes a double-height atrium to maximise natural light and a three-kilowatt solar panel system on the rooftop. The project highlights the architects’ commitment to reducing carbon emissions, with 17.5 tonnes of embedded carbon negated through the reuse of bricks, concrete, and steel.
