In a groundbreaking collaboration, female-led 3D motion design studio Dada Projects has joined forces with French photographer and art director Laetitia Dumez to create Fata Morgana, a stunning augmented 3D world that blurs the lines between reality and illusion. Using a combination of live-shot models and 3D animations, Fata Morgana takes viewers on a journey through other-worldly desert landscapes and a vibrant Garden of Eden paradise.
Clothing stylist Harley Graham has seamlessly integrated tech-wear and gorp-core outfits into the shoot, perfectly complementing the natural tones and fluorescent details of the environment. The fusion of fashion and animation in this project aims to push creative boundaries while reflecting the increasing presence of our existence in both the physical and digital realms.
The narrative of Fata Morgana revolves around a group of explorers in search of solutions in a world on the verge of collapse. They challenge the limits of time and perception, distorting nature and people along the way. Amidst the chaos, they stumble upon a symbol of hope and resilience, highlighting the idea that life can persist even in the harshest environments. The clothing worn by the models is not just for aesthetic purposes; it is functional and tailor-made for desert exploration, sourced from sustainable brands and independent designers.
This project serves as a metaphor for hope, despite its illusory nature. By combining 3D and photographic elements, Fata Morgana blurs the boundaries of reality and illusion. Unreal Engine was initially used to create the project’s scenes, allowing for seamless integration of environmental assets. However, the Dada Projects team later transitioned to Cinema4D for a more sophisticated outcome.
The real-life component of the project was shot in a green screen studio, using continuous lighting to create the illusion of sunlight at different times of the day. Slow motion shots captured the movement of the actors and their billowing clothes in the desert wind.
Photographer and Art Director Laetitia Dumez explains the magic of merging reality with illusion, stating that it can transport viewers to a world that is both familiar and fantastical. The collaboration between Dada Projects and Dumez was a natural fit, as they shared a passion for creating unique experiences. By combining their different skill sets, they were able to build something that would have been impossible to achieve alone.
Fata Morgana truly pushes the boundaries of fashion and animation, seamlessly blending the real and the digital. By presenting a fictional yet incredibly immersive 3D world, Dada Projects and Laetitia Dumez have created a visually stunning project that captivates and inspires.
