Norwegian designer Lars Beller Fjetland has teamed up with Shapes by Hydro to create the fully recyclable Bello! bench, which aims to showcase the possibilities of extruded aluminium. The bench is made from nearly 90% recycled and 100% recyclable aluminium, making it an environmentally friendly seating option. Beller Fjetland explained that he chose aluminium for its durability and introduced an anodised finish to enhance its robustness. During the London Design Festival, Beller Fjetland showcased the latest colourway of the bench in forest green, which was inspired by the rich landscapes of the forest. The bench’s ridged surface was influenced by the shape of penne rigate pasta, and it is manufactured using a similar extrusion process to the formation of dried pasta shapes. This innovative design makes the concept of extrusions accessible to a wide range of people. The Bello! bench is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, with its hard-wearing finish making it ideal for high-traffic areas like public transportation hubs. Beller Fjetland also pointed out that aluminium has inherent value, which makes it easier to recycle and promotes circularity. The low energy required to recycle aluminium makes using recycled material a viable option without compromising quality. This partnership between Lars Beller Fjetland and Shapes by Hydro demonstrates the potential of sustainable design.
