Chinese studio RooMoo has transformed two existing buildings on Shanghai’s Chongming Island to create the Som Land hostel. The design integrates with the natural landscape and respects local customs and traditions. The larger two-storey structure was renovated and extended to include an additional floor, while the smaller single-storey building became reception and communal space. Both buildings were clad in recycled bricks arranged in a pattern inspired by local cloth, and thatched roofs were added as a nod to historic building traditions. The interiors feature neutral tones, natural materials, and elements sourced from the site such as tree branches and bamboo poles. The design aims to provide guests with a warm and relaxing vacation while immersing them in the local environment. Som Land has been longlisted in the hotel and short-stay interior category for the 2023 Dezeen Awards.
